ABN - Tanzania’s telecommunications industry experienced further growth in 2016, with mobile phone subscriptions reaching 40.17 million, a rise of 0.9% on previous year figures.
The number of internet users also swelled to 19.86 million, compared to 17.26 million in 2015, according to a report by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
Tanzania’s telecommunications sector is one of the fastest growing areas of the economy, which is helping to connect a population of around 50 million.
The next move in Tanzania’s mobile communications industry will centre on the planned IPOs of the country’s three largest mobile network operators – Vodacom, Tigo and Airtel.
The companies are planning to float on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) this year to comply with a mandatory listing law.
The government hopes the IPOs will expand the fruits of the industry into the public sphere, however analysts are cautious of shares remaining unsold if only Tanzanians are able to purchase them.
