ABN – The government of Ondo state, Nigeria, has announced plans to start chocolate production in April 2016.
Ondo has the highest cocoa production of all Nigeria’s 36 states and thus has the greatest potential as a producer of chocolate.
The state government hopes that this move will boost the country’s manufacturing sector, create jobs and open up new opportunities for income generation.
Demand for chocolate in Nigeria is high, as shown by the country’s importation of chocolate bars increasing by 98% between 2008 and 2013.
However, there are a number of challenges to overcome including extreme weather conditions, pests, diseases, bad fertiliser and instability.
