ABN - A state-of-the-art sickle cell testing kit has been launched in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which will aid the diagnosis and treatment of sickle cell anaemia and related diseases across the country.
Sickle Scan is a rapid test device introduced by private health company Medomix, which gives test results within 30 minutes of taking a blood sample.
Dr. Khamis Kigwangwalla, Tanzania's Deputy Minister of Health, Social Development, Gender, Elderly and Children said: “With this technology, we can rescue millions of people, particularly children, dying of sickle cell diseases.
"Sickle Scan is accurate, effective, efficient, fast and affordable test which can be of great benefit in low resource settings, as it does not require electricity, hence can be used in remote areas.”
According to latest global statistics 300,000 babies are born with sickle cell anaemia, with 76% born in Africa.
Between 8,000 and 11,000 children are born with the condition in Tanzania alone, but the Sickle Scan test kit could greatly reduce the number of Tanzanians dying from the disease.
