EABSC constructs $500m bottling plant

ABN – East African Bottling S.C. (EABSC) has started construction on its US$500 million bottling plant in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

The company launched the project in April 2012 and it includes three new plants to be completed by 2020.

Elmi-Olindo Plc has worked with EABSC since 2001 and is carrying out the construction work on the plant.

Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Schweppes, and Dasani water are all bottled by the company.


Namibia bans Botswanan cattle due to Foot-and-Mouth outbreak

ABN – Following the rise in Food-and-Mouth diseases in Botswana, The Namibian government has stopped the country exporting meat to Angola through Namibia.

Botswana’s beef industry contributes 2.6% to Gross Domestic Production and the country’s cattle herd is estimated to be just over 2.5 million.

Botswana deputy minister of Agriculture Fidelis Molao said: “The Namibians did not allow passage of meat from Maun via Mohembo en-route to Angola, saying they first needed to carry out risk assessment.

“The risk assessment was delayed for a year, but when it came it indicated that beef could not pass from an FMD infected area through Namibia to Angola.

“We trust Namibian authorities to adhere to international standards and protocol in that regard.” 


Transcorp starts commercial farming in Benue State

ABN – Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp) has announced plans to establish a large-scale commercial farming business in Benue State.

Transcorp subsidiary Teragro Commodities will lease land in Ushongo from the Benue State government.

The land will be used to start up a large-scale farming business across the state.

The company also launched a fruit processing plant in Markurdi in 2012, which had an annual capacity of 26,500 tonnes.
